In the past few hours, a true avalanche of new details in the form of pictures, videos, and information about the upcoming iPhone has become available. In particular to the front-end sensor array, the facial recognition Face ID, and its design, a Golden Master of iOS 11 and the analyst Ming-Chi Kuo have revealed a lot of new exciting things.
What can be learned about a new device when resourceful developers such as Guilherme Rambo or Steve Smith get the final version of iOS 11 (Goldmaster or GM) in the hands, we just look at the example of iPhone 8 / X. Less than 100 hours before the big launch event, the iOS developers, already known by the HomePod Firmware leak, have piled up countless new details on the upcoming iPhone X, flanked by an analysis of the front-end sensor by the long-standing KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, and it is shown in the picture below.
The sensor array consists of 5 sensors
The display section on the upper iPhone X front consists of a total of five sensors in addition to the earphone. At the two ends of the array are new infrared laser transmitters and receivers that collect depth information and allow a three-dimensional facial recognition and touch in conjunction with the front camera (2nd sensor from the right) and lots of deep learning algorithms ID on iPhone X will be completely replaced.
Black front in all color variations
In the center next to the front camera, the usual proximity and ambient light sensors can also be found. Kuo promises, incidentally, that all (probably three) color variants of the iPhone X will have a black sensor unit to make the display section and the edges around the 5.8 inch OLED display less noticeable. Let’s get back to the setup process of Face ID, how the new face detection is appropriately called by Apple.
This is how Face ID Setup works
The iPhone X recognizes when its users are looking at the display and should, therefore, be intelligent enough to not dim the display when reading or to block access later when the user is removed. Prerequisite for the use of Face ID is the familiarization of the legal users. This process scans the human face from multiple angles, the head has to be moved in all four directions, which accompanies Apple through appropriate instructions.
Authentication via Face ID
In contrast to Touch ID, the process can obviously be interrupted and later be finished, at least interpret as “Partial Capture” in the source code of iOS 11. After the successful setup of Face ID, face recognition can now be used not only for Apple Pay but also for purchases in iTunes and the App Store as well as for Safari AutoFill, or all other occasions where Touch ID was previously possible as biometric authentication. Of course, passcode authentication is still possible.
The final iPhone name and more information
The two developers have not only found details about Face ID in the Golden Master of iOS 11, but also gained a lot of other exciting insights. Here is a brief summary of all information found in the last few hours:
- Portrait-Lighting: Similar to portrait mode with the rear dual cam, Apple due to the 3D sensors would also be able to pose self portraits. Different light situations such as Contourlight, Natural Light or Stagelight are mentioned here in iOS 11.
- As with the HomePod-Leak a few weeks ago, the iOS 11 firmware confirms some new recording modes for video, such as 4K @ 60fps or 1080p @ 240fps.
- The OLED iPhone will probably have a true-tone display, similar to the LCD panels in the iPad Pro lineup.
- The simultaneous pressing of the on / off switch and the volume button seems to trigger an SOS mode.
- iPhone name: Notes on the designation of this year’s iPhone collection in iOS 11 GM point to the introduction of “iPhone 8”, “iPhone 8 Plus” and “iPhone X” next Tuesday 12 September. The latter is the new OLED iPhone, which stands in addition to the iPhone 7 successors for the future of the iPhone series and will probably be difficult to get hold of.
- Last but not Least Apple also integrates the 3D face recognition in the form of so-called Animojis. These are emojis, which convey facial expressions and possibly also their own voice as an animation. This could look something like in the GIF below. And yes, a smiling pile of shit should be possible in iMessage.
New wallpapers
In the end, we would like to keep you a few new pictures, which are included in the final iOS 11 version. The magazine 9to5Mac has provided them all in full resolution as ZIP file. Here is a small selection of a total of 16 new pictures, which will be standard on the new iPhones, but will also be available on older iPhones with iOS 11.
